How many of you bake birdie muffins for your flock? What kind of variations do you do? We make three different kinds, spicy, fruity and veggie. We use a basic cornbread recipe (you can also use jiffy etc but we like to do lower sodium). Then depending on which recipe we are using we do the following.

For fruity we mix in baby food fruit such as peaches, papaya, bananas, mango, apple, blueberries etc. Then we use dried fruit mixture with the baby food and bake like the directions say.

For veggie we again mix varieties of veggie baby food such as sweet potatoes and corn, mixed veggies, garden blend, carrots, squash, green beans, peas etc and add in grated vegetables or frozen mixed vegetables (thawed first) and bake as directed.

For spicy we add in fresh grated jalapenos, fresh cilantro, fresh arugula, grated serrano peppers and I usually go ahead and add a little bit of baby food vegetables just for flavor and texture.

When baking since we have such a large flock I usually bake half in mini ice cream cones and half just in mini muffin pans. The cones work great for larger birds (although our budgies love having one cone suspended in their cages and will finish one within a couple hours.

Also just another tip, these are moist breads so they need to be frozen if not going to be used within the first 3 days. After that time they may start to mold depending on humidity. You can freeze them though and then just pop however many you need into the microwave for a minute or two until thawed and warm but not hot then serve to your birdies. Even our picky eaters eventually learn to love them!
