Since I was a kid, I've always thought it'd be neat to own a bird; however, I lack a lot of patience in my arsenal, I hate being bitten, and I don't like overly noisy and messy pets.
However, I work at a petshop and I've been there several months. At this store we have an Indian Ringneck Parakeet who is pretty quiet- meaning he only screams once every few hours weather the shop is empty or full- and he's only made a god-awful mess once when he tore a perch to ribbons (literally).
As much as I despise the cockatoos we have up there, this bird has sorta grown on me and I've started thinking about buying him. For the past three days, I've been reading up on the species, reading countless 'Is a bird the right pet for me?' articles, and talking to my family and boyfriend (who I live with, thus he's got some say in this). In everything I've read, most say these birds are loud, but I've never noticed this particular one being loud so my first question is this:
Is he an exception to the stereotype?
Also, he's three years old at least as the neck marking is fully developed. He's also wild- I doubt he's been handled a day in his life. Would I be able to get him used to me, being handled, and if so, how do I go about that? I know you can't re-train older dogs, hence why I'm asking.
As I said earlier, I've only seen this bird make a horrendous mess once in the few months I've been working in the petshop. Is his mess just getting mixed up with the rest of the birds' messes or is he really cleaner than most birds?
Any other information would be highly appreciated. =)
