I would imagine as well that it would be safe for up to a year since it is not as vital in calcium absorption in birds. As far as length it would just depend on your setup. Where we have cages more separate we use the 12" bulbs and fixtures, where we have rows of cages we use the 4' bulbs and fixtures so it will just depend on your cage and where you have it situated.
