Eerie Screaming Bird At Night in NJ?

Sorry...I posted this on another forum as well but should have REALLY posted it here.

I live in Northern NJ and every night around 12 or 1 I hear a strange screaming coming from the forest. It's almost human but sounds tortured...like a baby in agony or something. It's scary as heck! Could it be a bird? Some sort of owl maybe? I thought someone here might have some ideas. Thanks!
