>>Ooops--I'm new to this forum and am still finding my way around. I started this topic in the shoeing forum, but it's really a vet question. I like to limit the amount of medications, supplements, etc. that vets sometimes prescribe, and I'm wondering if anybody knows of a more "natural" approach.

Joan -

The best way to prevent and treat scratches, which is just a bacterial skin infection, is to make the area inhospitable to the bacteria. Keep it dry and clean, and groom often to promote the good circulation so the skin's own defenses can do their work. If it's a mild infection, that's all it will take. Using an antibacterial soap will help also. The only time you need bigger meds is with severe or stubborn infections which do require oral antibiotics for a couple of weeks.

Good luck!!!

PS - I tried to email you back about the question you asked concerning our bookstore but AOL keeps bouncing the email back to me. However, I have forwarded your request on to the right people
