Hello! This all started with a few ants wandering around in my apartment, which I noticed and put in a dish with the idea I would take 'em outside and return them to their colony. I could not find any of the same ant species outside. I ended up finding what I believe to be a complete colony of these little black ants under the carpet in my apt. What I'd like to know is: How did they come to set up a colony in my apt so quickly? Is it possible they have a queen? Or are they somehow coming from outside? I mean, I can observe them actively making trails and bringing food back to a hole in the carpet where it meets with the wood floor. Would it perhaps be possible to capture this colony(if it is that) and set it up in an ant house-type thing? I'm silly, but I really don't want to poison them, observing them is so fascinating! But I can't let them just set up housekeeping in my apartment, unfortunately. If anyone has suggestions I would be sooooo grateful! I can post a description or picture if that would help to know the species, but I assume they are the standard American "sidewalk ant". Thank you in advance!!
