A place to feed, a place to sense vibrations if anything approaches, a pre-molt or pre-mate spot, the list goes on. But as far as putting your T into a smaller enclosure it's no big deal really. I keep mine in small critter keepers w/ some cocoa fiber and a water dish. The closet is a good place to keep Ts if you do not want them seen.
