I have two indoor only cats that I allow out on an upstairs balcony (fully protected against jumping off) while I am home. Birds will alight on the tree and railings and I have a birdbath out there as well.

One of them got a bird out on the balcony yesterday. Pretty amazing how he jumped it---I wonder if it was already sick. Anyway, I intervened, brought him inside, the bird sat on the balcony and when I went out again to check on it, it flew away and seemed OK. It was a mourning dove. So he now has two to his name and the other cat has one.

Funny, but for a split second, I thought about just letting him finish it off, for sport, letting him get his fully jollies and blood lust out. Would that have been a bad idea?
