So I water down canned cat food, mash it up until its like runny oatmeal.

Ah, OK. I did this for Pookey after his amputation surgery as I had to feed him by hand (with a needle-less syringe squirting in the mouth). I called it "watered down cat food" not fishy slurries. LOL! You had me thinking of a fish flavored milk-shake and I was getting queasy! One thought -- most vets sell a wet cat food that is packed with nutrients for sick cats. It is recommended to help get cats back to health. Might be something you can ask about -- the most popular brand I've seen is Science Diet AD. Only sold at vets. Sick cats go nuts over it more so than other wet foods. It is what I used with Pookey that I watered down and hand fed him. Helped him keep on weight and nutrients. Prior to discovering the Science Diet AD, I'd watered down 100% chicken baby food. Beech Nut has a Stage 1 baby food that is nothing but chicken and chicken broth (no additives). But, the Science Diet AD is pure gold to sick cats or cats that need to put quality weight back on.
