My dad who is pretty handy made us a baby gate for a pretty large opening between the living room and dining room/kitchen area. It's not your typical baby gate (which can run around $100 for a large area like we have). It's made out of pvc pipes and and curtain rod holders. In our other place we just gated off one doorway and the cats came around the other way. By then baby Katelyn was distracted by toys and didn't come all the way into the kitchen.
