Hi ! I have to agree, gender makes no real difference, its the individual cats personality and the best way is to interact with them before making a decision.

Now on another point, you mention you have never had a cat before. A few things you may want to consider, Persians are very high maintenance cats. They need daily grooming! That beautiful fluffy kitten you start with can quickly become a very unhappy, mat covered baby without it. This is one of the main reasons Persians end up in shelters. There are also the eye and possible breathing problems to consider. A short haired cat, whether from a responsible breeder or from a shelter, is a lot less work, especially for someone who has no experience..good luck with whatever you decide
