Welcome to the Senior years. Advancements in vet medicine these days are astounding compared to twenty years ago. If you stay on top of things with your vet, you guys will do just fine for a good while to come, I predict.

My cats are 15 now and I've gone thru cancer, one major surgery, kidney disease, brain swelling, and thyroid problems with the cats in the past three years. Believe it or not, with all that, both cats are "normal" with diet changes and the help in one case of low dose (and inexpensive) meds... I anticipate they will be with me for a good while to come, as does the vet. Things that I thought were scary "death sentences" have turned out to be not so bad with regular vet checkups -- and can be controlled fairly easily long term. I really don't spend that much $; catching things early on with subtle changes is easier and "cheaper" to control than waiting for BIG symptoms to appear.

Eating changes, water drinking changes (particularly drinking a lot more water all of a sudden), weight changes, litter box changes (can't pee, pees alot, can't poop), and habit changes (suddenly energetic/or suddenly lethargic) are signs to check things out with the vet. Six month visits are really a good thing to catch things early...
