Thank you all for the suggestions!

Little Maki has finally learned to use the loo properly! I think it was a matter of not wanting to leave his parents at night. But, after a few nights of heartache (keeping their bedroom door shut) and moving the litter into their bathroom instead of in the storage room, he is much happier and using the litter as he should!
