I am in a similar position with two cats very used to being outside most of the day. I have occasionally let them have supervised time outside in a confined area, but it is not safe to leave them out. I think it just takes time, sometimes a lot for them to get over the extreme urge. Mine have been mostly locked in for 4 months now and still want out. I try to spend more time playing with them and make sure to keep a window open for them to sit in while i am there
