You mentioned the mother was marbled -- does she have any orange on her at all?

I am not an expert, but I suspect it could also be a recessive gene in either if neither parent has orange... I say this because I am a red head, as is one of my cousins, and none of our four collective parents have red hair. At all. Our joint grandmother on our mothers' side had auburn hair, however. So, the red hair skipped a generation. Might be what happened with your cats.

This is the first I've ever heard of running a DNA test on kittens. But, after hearing it, I would suspect it would be common in the show-cat/breeding world if there were any questions... Interesting.
