Short car trip-long weekend away

I have a young kitty I've had for about 2 months (he's 17 weeks old) He was declawed (only way I was able to adopt him-indoor only kitty) and neutered on 3/26. He has totally quieted down, so much so I was a bit concernd, biut he appears to be doing fine and he cks out at the vet. Anyway, I'm going to a wedding next weekend and plan on traveling 1-1/2 hours up north to stay at a hotel Fri/Sat & Sun. I will be with him Fri and Sat mroning, attend the wedding Sat aft/eve and come home Sunday. I will be stopping for 4 hours on Sunday in a little scenic town to eat and shop. I want him to get used to being in the car and not afraid to travel. As long as I provide him with water, food and a litter box and let him out to stretch he should be ok? How about on the day I plan on stopping? Is he OK on his own in the car for 3-4 hours? Do I leave him out of his carrier in the car (to access the littler box) while I'm shopping? What is the opinion?
