Your cat will be much better off traveling with you. Flying in cargo can be very hazardous. He won't be happy taking a road trip, but he'll be OK once you arrive at your final destination.

Be sure that the hotels you choose allow pets. Also be sure that the cat has a collar with an ID. Try not to leave the cat alone in the car, especially if its in the sun. Even on cool days the interior temperature of a car can get very hot very quickly.
