My female cat Skitty was spayed at 6 months and then went into heat at around 8 months. It was crazy, she'd go into heat for 5-6 days yowling and spraying everything, and male cats were decorating the outside windows since she's an indoor only cat. When the heat would end, she'd be exhausted. She didn't eat or sleep much during that phase. She'd be out of heat for about a week and then it would start again. The cycle was about 5 days on 6 days off. When I took her back to the vet he said it was "behavioral" and that she was "just vocal". He implied that I didn't know what a cat in heat acted like. She was treated with antibiotics though no urinary problems were uncovered. I continued to take her to the same vet who performed the spay who continued to say there was nothing wrong with the cat. This went on for nearly a year before that vet left the practice and a new vet agreed to do blood tests. The tests showed unusual levels of hormones (not normal, not pregnant, not in heat but somewhere in between and definitely not spayed). The vet began giving her injections (daily for the span of a week) of a folicle developing hormone and the blood tests showed active tissue responding to the injections. She agreed to perform exploratory surgery and discovered some folicle tissue in the left side of the abdomen and removed it. She did not charge me for the additional surgery, though I did pay for all the tests. Skitty has been a neutered cat ever since, though she still has major litterbox issues.
Hope that helps! It was a very frustrating experience for me and I'm sure Skitty's rapid cycling was creating a health issue since she wouldn't eat or sleep during the heat phase.
Lora
