Actually any change in bladder or bowel habits should be checked out by a vet because this can signal a medical cause. The cat may be in pain when he defecates which might be causing him to avoid the box. Or he could be developing senility problems.

For now, put a litterbox close by your bed and cover your bed with foil or better yet a carpet runner (those plastic carpet protector things) turned upside down. Also you might want to try a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway or even just use some Feliway spray on the bed itself.
