You may have to adopt a meal time routine with this guy. Sitting with him and petting him might help. He may crave attention.
Also, the name brands you mention are not really the "premium brands" and you might want to go to a large pet supply store and check out the ingrediants in their premium brands. Look for human grade meats, no meat by-products, no corn or wheat (gluten).
A vet exam might be in order to determine if there is an underlying physical problem.
Finally, please don't let your husband beat or hit the cat. Striking out at a cat doesn't work and will only serve to increase the problem.
