By all means don't beat the cat. That only serves to intimidate him/her and would probably make his/her eating habits even more sporadic and not a pleasant experience. Secondly, don't thow away cans of food he/she doesn't like, donate them to a shelter, as they are always in need.

A visit to the vet for some possible bloodwork and to rule out anything physically wrong.

A lot of cats crave attention, as they are social eaters and it may be that this is really what he/she craves, not necessarily a daily change in foods. Bring him/her to his bowl and pet him and soothingly talk to him/her while introducing the food bowl.Try mixing canned and dry premium food.
