She needs to go to the vet for a check-up ASAP to be sure there is nothing wrong medically. It may be hard to get her there given the aggressiveness, but it must be done.

If the problem is behavioral, something must have startled her. Something really inane like a broom falling over unexpectly can get a cat into the agressive mode and keep her there. Re-run the whole scenario in your head - did you make any unusual sounds while talking on the phone or hanging up? Is it possible that she saw another cat outside. Did you knock something over? Did you move anything while talking on the phone that the cat might have noticed?

Usually some sort of anti-anxiety medication can help with a suddenly fearful cat. The meds help calm the cat and unlearn the aggressiveness. When the cat isn't aggressive she learns that nothing is going to harm her and the med can be gradually withdrawn under your vet's supervision.

You may have to talk to an animal behaviorist if your vet cannot help you.

Good luck to you and the cat!

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!
