My mother kept a cat with the family for 17 years. I helped feed her and keep up the litter box. However, behavior and socialization were not my primary responsibilities. My mother and I have adopted a new cat. He's a very friendly male, 3 years old, and is an orange tabby.

I cannot say that this is a problem. I just want to make sure everything is normal. He has spent most of the first day examining the house. I know this to be all right, but I keep getting the feeling that he is used to a specific reaction from his previous owners. He keeps going up to the kitchen cupboards, closed doors, and even toilets - and then he'll just meow in a very sad tone. It really seems as though he expects a certain reaction from me.

Any theories would be greatly appreciated.
