I have heard that it is better to have one male and one female. But. But I have had two of the same and they get along fine and I have had them one of each. I have found that either mix works outfine. If you do decide on a male make sure to get it fixed before 6 months.
My female Gabby loved to wrestle with my almost two yr old male Tucker. They still love to wrestle.

As for litter it's recommended not to get clumping for kittens because they tend to play in the litter box, eat the litter and so on. If they do ingest the litter it can make them very sick.
