Same thing here, digging and digging and more digging. I don't put anything under the box tho, we have hardwood floors and sweeping it up is easy. One thing I don't understand tho, is they will often try and dig the wall "into" the box to cover things as well. Now I would think, that after trying that a few dozen times, a cat might be smart enough to know it isn't working...but alas, they still do it, maybe they are just trying to be efficient (wish I could teach them to scratch the litter they scatter OUT, back IN!)
BTW, this is what they are really doing in the box...
