For all cats who decide not to use the litterbox a first step is a vet exam to rule out any underlying medical cause. If the problem is behavioral, there are some steps you can take to help solve the problem.

First, the area that has been soiled needs to be cleaned with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle. Then use some Feliway and spritz it on the area according to the package directions. A comfort zone plug in can help too.

It is helpful to re-train the cat to the box, but in the case of the cats who are left for periods of time, this may not be feasible. Anyhow, you need to isolate the offender in a bathroom or other small room with only the litterbox, bedding and food. Usually the cat will begin to re-use the box and then access to the rest of the house can be gradually increased. There is also a kitty litter that claims to be "attracting" and will re-train a cat to the box if used.

My sister has a cat who is attracted to the floor vents where the heat comes from. I have also heard of cats peeing on stoves and even in toasters!! So heat may have some sort of attraction. If possible try to figure out a way to make the thing inaccessible. I know this would be hard with a floor vent.

As a last resort, discuss the use of an antianxiety medication such as Buspar with your vet. These have been known to solve a lot of troubles and as soon as the cat "unlearns" the bad behavior and feels less stressed the drug can be gradually withdrawn.
