Hi,

First of all, never, ever, ever smack a cat! He will just become afraid of you, and hand-shy and it will not help.

Second, you should not assume that this is a behavioral thing. Your cat is a senior and he may have health issues causing him to urinate outside of the box. He may have kidney issues, diabetes, a urinary tract infection, or even hyperthyroidism. He needs to go to the vet and have bloodwork and a urinalysis done to find out if something is going on with him. Often cats will urinate out of the litterbox if they aren't feeling well.

Please take your cat in and let us know how it goes.

Regards,
PHKitkat
