Hi,

Ideally, your cat should have a vet check to rule out any health issues. Often cats will urinate and/or defecate out of the box to let us know that they aren't feeling well. Otherwise you cannot assume that your cat is having behavioral issues.

You also need to get a good enzyme-based cleaner to use on your futon. Your cat may be returning there because he can still smell his urine and feces even after your cleaning. Enzyme-based cleaners, such as Nature's Miracle, work to remove odors.

I also recommend adding another litter box, and possible taking off the top on the one you have now. Your kitty may have decided that he doesn't like a covered box. After all, once it is used the odor is concentrated within the box and cats have a much more sensitive sense of smell than we do. Some cats insist on a perfectly clean litterbox also so it is best to keep the box as clean as possible. They can be extremely fussy. Also, try to use unscented litter only as many cats do not like the scented ones.

Regards,
PHKitkat
