Hi,
I have to start by saying that I am not big on any self-cleaning litterbox. There have been cases where cats have been hurt or badly frightened by them. This may or may not have anything to do with your particular problem, however.
It's not fun having to deal with the mess, but when a cat stops using the litterbox there is always a reason. Sometimes a cat may be letting us know that he or she just doesn't feel well. Or a cat may not want to use a certain box or a box in a certain area.
It is always a good thing to have more than one litterbox, ideally one for each cat plus one extra. You never know with cats, they might decide that they no longer want to share one box. If something happens to scare a cat while he or she is using a box, they may never use that one again.
You might also consider a vet visit if the diarrhea problem continues. It could be that your cat just couldn't quite get to the box in time.
Take care, PHKitkat
