I have the same problem with my cat from time to time. Not so much anymore but when he was a kitten he would do it all the time. I don't like him doing this because it gets the smell of the food on the toy and then he drags it around the house and makes everything else smell like it. What I did to minimize him doing this is warned him the first couple of times and from there when he continued to do it, I would take that particular toy away for one hour. He started to figure out that if it goes in the food or water dish, then it disappears. So he doesn't do it as much any more because he does not like to lose his toys. Once in a while he does forget, but for the most part he has stopped.
