I have heard of this sort of behavior before, but have never actually seen it. Probably it is a sort of "mommy" thing even though he's a male. Neutering would probably bring about more maternal behaviors.

This sounds similiar to a "cacheing" behavior I read about. Some cats hoard objects and get them out to check on them from time to time. One cat in the article had a rock collection that she kept in a jar and she would meow until her human emptied the jar. Then she would line the rocks up and sniff each one carefully and drop it back into the jar.

I think you should definitely enter that video in some contest! It sounds hilarious!
