I don't think you've hurt him. He has probably developed dry skin due to the decreased humidity that winter brings on. That "dandruff" is a tell- tale sign.

There are supplements you can give him to help with this problem. Talk to your vet and s/he will guide you. My vet prescribed something and I can't remember what it was, but it really helped with my cat's dandruff.
