My male 1.5yo, also neutered at 6mos, has exhibited very similar behavior, except his target of choice is the arms of myself and my boyfriend while we are sleeping. It is, assuredly, an interesting way to awaken at 3am. I would much prefer he find a stuffed playmate...

I used to have a cockatiel male who would please himself using the pillows in our living room quite vigorously. I think it is normal to be uncomfortable with a pet's sexual behavior given the culture many of us were raised in. I think the best advice is to learn to see the humor in the situation, and place articles you do not want 'loved on' in a place inaccessible to the cat.
