That is exactly why you should keep your cats indoors. I lost two cats that I dearly loved when I was a child because they were hit by cars. The mother cat is probably fine and caring for her kittens somewhere safe and hidden, but since they're outdoors, and they may even mature outdoors, there's a chance they'll grow up wild and never be domesticated.

I never let my cats outdoors and they're perfectly safe and pretty happy most of the time. I give them cat grass and catnip and they sometimes kick the dirt out of my plants to roll around in. But even if they were at the door all day whining to get out (which they aren't), I'd rather them be safe than diseased or dead.
