Usually the kitten inoculations for the upper respiratory (FVRCP) does need to be boostered or it won't be effective. Rabies isn't recommended for cats under six months, however your community may require it by law. You should check with the shelter to see for sure what if any shots were given. Also you may want to ask the vet to do a titer to see what immunities the kitten may have (he may have been vacccinated or may have picked up some immunities from his mother's milk.)

Generally vaccines are safe and effective. There is a type of vaccine called PureVax that is supposedly free of the additives that are implicated in Vaccine Associated Sarcoma.

Your vet will be able to help you determine when and what vaccines to give the kitten - 2.5 pounds seems small, but many kittens are actually smaller.
