from the Winn Feline Foundation, this reinforces what became evident during the Feline Genome Project: that FIP is a mutation of one of the common Feline Corona Viruses, which are contagious. the mutation, however, is NOT. while there is a known genetic component to which cats' bodies are more likely to have this mutation, there is no way as of yet to know when and where the mutation will occur. most cats in a multi-cat environment will test positive for the corona virus (most humans will, too, as corona is essentially the common cold), but only a very small percentage of cats will end with the the fatal, mutated FIP. (SARS is considered by many researchers to be the human version of FIP: mutated form of the human corona virus.)
