Hi,
There is so much discrepancy about whether or not renal diets are helpful, that I have fed my CRF cats whatever they wanted. I feel that the real key is giving them sub-q fluids and as much canned food as they will eat. Some dry is ok, but if you think about it, the chronic dehydration present in CRF cats is not helped at all by feeding any dry food.

Read some of the labels on the prescription foods and you will find that the quality is not that good anyway. Many vets now feel that it is the quality of the protein in the food that is important, not the quantity. There is even some evidence that a low protein diet may be harmful to kidneys, unless a cat has very high numbers.

I can look up some articles for you if you are interested.
