I have an 18 yo cat who has been having major sneezing and runny nose issues. Eyes are clear and vet said x-ray of lungs look great. No fever, but the nasal discharge is cloudy, so vet put her on amoxicillin. This is the 2nd full day of the meds and so far no improvement that I can see, but maybe I'm being impatient?!?!
Here are my 2 major concerns. 1) cat has not been eating properly. She runs to the dish whenever I put it down but after a moment or two of "picking", she seems to lose interest. I'm assuming a combination of not feeling well and not being able to smell/taste anything b/c of the nasal issues. I'm hoping once the antibiotics kick in I will see an improvement. But I'm worried that the lack of good nutriti0n will make it harder for her to fight off whatever else it is that's in her system.
2) the vet recommended an antihistimine. Because of my cat's severe dislike for taking pills, the doc said I could use OTC Children's Benadryl. But my cat really, really, REALLY foams and gags after I give her the dosage (when I smell the "lovely cherry scented liquid", it make MY nose burn!!! How on earth do they get kids to drink this stuff?!?!). Pills are not an option because my I literally have to sit on her and shove the thing down her throat...after which she 8 times out of 10 will throw it back up. Mixing it with food doesn't seem to work either (because of the eating issue!!).
So I guess my questions are: how long b4 the antibiotics kick in? Any other alternatives to an antihistimine that won't make my cat look and act as though she's possesed by demons? how do I get her some nutrition to boost her recovery process?
Thanks so much for your help!
