Usually illnesses would not progress so rapidly or be so painful so quickly. Naturally there is no way to know for sure, but I doubt seriously that it was something contagious she picked up outside. She may have had some sort of injury that couldn't be seen, or even some genetic defect that just so happened to give her problems so soon after she'd been out!
