At the moment he has free access to dry, which won't be changed. He also gets a 3 oz can twice a day. I was going to take him back to my older cat's ration of 1/2 can twice a day.

I agree with Tessie.1/2 can twice a day should be plenty with his dry food and possible treats.
Once in a while put about 5 of those small salad shrimp in his food.He will love you to pieces.LOL
Oh those small ones are inexpensive.Heck i nibble on them to.LOL
