It is possible that Mom had not finished training him yet. Where did Mom go to the bathroom? And what litter did she use? You need to keep taking him to the litter box several times a day. Especially right after he eats and when he wakes up. If you can put him in a room that doesn't have plants or dirt or anything else that he might consider a nice place for a kitten to go. I use a small bathroom. Give him some toys a box with a towel to sleep in and a litter box. And of course food and water. Hopefully others will have more suggestions for you.
