Think about it from his point of view....Mommy and siblings have mysteriously disappeared and he is in a strange place with strange people and in his eyes no one to protect him. So when no one is there, he does what Mommy taught him.....hide. I would start letting him out some when you are there but put him back if he is alone. Are there other pets in the house? Let him hide if he wants to, being under the bed or under the couch is ok. He will come out on his own if there is something fun to do and soon he will be more comfortable and will not want to miss anything and will stay out. Just give him some time to adjust.
