My Eddie used to gnaw on socks. Now I make sure he always has at least one of those soft furry cat toys available to him. That seems to satisfy his need to gnaw. (Of course I have to keep a close eye on them so when he chews a hole in one I can throw it away before he tries to eat the stuffing.)
Maybe it would be worth a try to see if you can redirect your kitty's attention.
