As far as I know the only things that could really affect shedding are temperature (seasonal changes), and illness....

I personally don't notice my cats shedding any more of less at the change of seasons, but I do notice it with my greyhounds, who also are very low shedding animals, my white one actually molts his coat in the spring, which is very unusual for the breed.
