I try to remember to take it out and place in refrigerator overnight. If I forget, I'll just take it out and let it thaw on the counter all day while I'm at work.
I'm from Iowa too. Ha! However I know that it can't hurt you because this is the way my family has always done it. Maybe there would be a danger to somebody who isn't used to it?
