A decade and more ago, there were dumpster drop-off points around the county where you could recycle glass, newspaper, plastic and cans. Eventually it ended because they bred so many rats. ugh! In my hometown, there was curbside pick-up for a number of years but it was dropped because of cost.

My city is built with almost as many alleys as surface streets, so many of us share large barrels for trash pick-up. There is also a large recycling center near downtown, so we have nearly daily trollers for cans in our dumpsters. Anything metal will disappear within hours from the dumpsters, most days. The downside - We've had downspouts stolen, and a house just up the way had much of the siding stolen off the garage. We knew it was going to be bad holiday season for retailers back in Oct. when the number of trollers jumped WAY up.

So part of our garbage gets recycled with no effort from us. But I did hang on to old computer equipment for over a year until I could recycle it although it is legal for us to just trash it. And I'm a big on donating to Freecycle, Goodwill, etc.
