they have a small amount of mercury in them. They say if you break one, leave the area for about 15 minutes.

years ago I dated a man who while on a two week leave from the military after his father's death, found a pint bottle of mercury in his father's workshop. He spent most of his leave calling around his home state trying to get someone to take it. Finally he after going rounds with the EPA he told them if it wasn't gone by Monday, it was going down the storm drain. The local fire dept picked it Monday morning. This was before 9/11, I'm sure he would be arrested on terrorist threats if it happened today.
