I am guilty of a comment like this that recently backfired.

A group of us were all out for dinner and the waitress picked up our credit cards/bills to ring us out. One person had cash and said they'd need change. When I handed her the pile of credit cards and bills, I said, we'll need change, too...

A few minutes later she came with our bills and all was fine. We were getting ready to leave and she came running over with add'l credit card slips showing "$0.00 Change" on the bottom.

She was young and thought I was serious. She wasn't joking when she handed them to us, wanted to know if these slips would work... I told her yes, and apologized for adding extra to her work with my joke... (tipped her well, too).

My friends gave me such a hard time for harrassing a young waitress (she was maybe 20).

Groan...
