Blood oranges are grown/originate in Sicily, although other countries have started growing them and they are now out in more abundance. When I lived in Sicily in the 80s, I had blood oranges aplenty and loved them. The problem is, since they were pretty limited to Sicily, I haven't seen them much until lately when other countries (US included) started growing them... I am glad to start seeing them and love them.

I try new fruits and veggies all the time. If my grocrey store sells it, I've probably tried it. Love Mangos, Passion Fruit, Pomegranate, etc...

I've been lucky to have lived in Germany and Italy for 4 years (in the Air Force) and traveled pretty extensively throughout Europe and UK. You starve if you don't try new things when traveling... There have been some things that I would have never dreamed of trying if I they weren't served to me/set in front of me (would have picked something different on a menu): Like fish, beans, and tomatoes for breakfast (England); liver pate for breakfast and escargot for lunch (Belgium); baby squid in pasta (Italy); Beef tongue (Germany)... I tried them all, but of all the strange things served to me, only one didn't set well with me -- yogurt on granola (Holland) and it seems to be the most "bland" of new things tried and pretty popular now in the US. LOL.

Even normal sounding things tast different in a foreign country due to sauces, seasonings, cuts of meat, etc... I've kept the philosophy of not turning my nose up to new things without tasting first and have rarely been disappointed...
