Snakes need more horizontal space in general. You would only want a tall tank for a tree snake. Corn snakes are a good starter species. Balls can be a bit tough for beginners.

I would suggest starting with a corn. After you get used to taking care of it and do a good amount of research you should be good to give a ball python a try.
